Afterimages
With wonderful fellow students and a master teacher in a well equipted photographic laboratory, I spent 8 days which changed my way of seeing and presenting what I see.
Here are a month's best efforts.

Cathy and I traveled to the Marina Green in San Francisco to view race 5 of the America's Cup finals. We lost. Great day for the city.

Place
There is a special place where Cathy and I were invited for a weekend retreat.
Called El Rancho Cienega del Gabilan it is a working cattle ranch owned now for many generations by the Reeves family.
Lauren and Darrell kindly hosted us.
Here is an eclectic group of images to give only my limited view of this place which reaches back to the 19th century.

Same River Twice
In rain and fog Yosemite was different from the crisp spring of a year ago.
Diffuse light shows hidden things otherwise masked by bright and shadow.
In Oakdale, on the way home, a car and two trees caught my eye. Not far away was a train car covered with graffiti that wanted to have its picture taken, who am I to argue?

A Dozen from San Francisco
April 1 to 3 found Cathy and me in San Francisco staying at the White Swan Inn on Bush. Very pleasent place with a good breakfast and happy people.
Our mission was to visit the California Academy of Sciences, view Vermeer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' at the de Young Museum, enjoy the iconic Japanese Tea Garden and peek into the Cartoon Art Museum. Mission accomplished.
I made pictures with a 40mm pancake lens and the 6D which are presented here. They belong in different portfolios with pictures like them but that is for another day. (rlb)

Road Out, Road Back
A crisp day on the road in San Benito County near Hollister. Screaming spring green hills and still bare trees.
Out on El Camino Real, then to San Juan Highway, next to San Juan Road, further South on Union Road, and Southside Drive to Tres PiƱos.
Then far from the beaten track on Quien Sabe Road (who knows?) and into a hidden inner valley along Santa Anita Road.
Back on Wright and Bolsa Roads. Sunset and 101 North. Fire in the sky.
Remembering Gail Larrick, 1938-2013, photographer and lover of photography.

A week on board Safari Endeavour in the Sea of Cortez. Cathy snorkeled with sea lions. We walked on desert islands, stargazed from an arroyo, kayaked in Elephant Cove in a cave, watched Mobula rays fly out of the water, made the acquaintance of the Blue-footed Booby, played with hundreds of Bottlenose dolphins from a speeding skiff, picked up a desiccated Trigger fish, watched thousands of birds feeding, saw a few whales, meet new and amazing people, ate wonderful food and pastries, marveled at sunsets, painted, and photographed.
Cameron Zegers, a professional photographer, joined the trip and made a number of rather special pictures especially of the rays breaching. Gordon Clement brought a GoPro camera and made a number of movies of the dolphins and sea lions both above and below the water.
Gallery pictures taken with my new Canon 6D.

Sea of Cortez
In January we took an "un-cruise" to Mexico's Sea of Cortez. Somehow, inbetween snorkeling, walking, kayaking, and fine dining, I managed to get in some painting from our lovely ship, the Safari Endeavour. The vast landscape and the constant floating back-and-forth of the boat led me to this long panoramic format. I really had no choice...I'd be looking at one area, and gradually the boat would move...and I'd be looking at something else! So I figured I'd just work it in. I ended up really enjoying this format. I hope you enjoy some of the warmth, joy, and bounty of the Sea of Cortez as you look at these, and consider visiting yourself! Teeming with life, it is impossible to feel alone or important.
Technical notes: These are quickly sketched in pencil, painted in watercolor, then inked with my trusty Namiki fountain pen and Noodler's black ink; total working time is about 2.5 hours each. Originals are approximately 4.5 x 11 inches.
